Where? Zoom

The Bioelectronics and Nanomedicine Research Center (BNRC) and the Office for Undergraduate Research invites proposals for the Bioelectronics and Nanomedicine Summer Research Program. The program is designed to spur transdisciplinary collaborations between research groups at UK in the fields of bioelectronics and nanomedicine and build further strength in these important research fields.

Graduate students in the program will receive a stipend of $8,000 for the summer and undergraduate students will receive a stipend of $5,000 for the summer. Each student award will receive an additional $1000 for materials, supplies, or user fees to support the project, which will be administered by their research advisor. The summer research program will last for 10 weeks, with a kickoff meeting anticipated in mid to late May.

Students are required to attend a kick-off meeting and an end-of-summer poster session to present their results. Biweekly seminars or discussions will be held to promote engagement and provide opportunities for learning about bioelectronics and nanomedicine.

Joint applications involving groups of up to three students working between two or more research laboratories are highly encouraged. Individual applications will also be accepted. Group applications need to span more than one research laboratory and will be submitted as one application that includes the CVs of all applicants. A typical group application will be led by a graduate student and include two undergraduate students; however, other group structures are possible.

Students applying as a group of two or more researchers should include the following:

A proposal for planned summer research, including background, experimental methods, objective(s), and key expected results. The proposal should include a discussion of how the research will be split between the researchers on the project, including the research laboratory that each student will primarily be working in. Multi-student proposals must involve two or more research laboratories. It is suggested that these proposals include one graduate student working with two undergraduate students. Maximum of three pages.

A one-page CV from each student. Proposals intended for three students will be accepted even if one student remains to be identified. That is, proposals planned for three students will be accepted with only two CVs.

Letters from at least two faculty members that mention the proposal goals and how the project may lead to future funding opportunities.

The application for students applying as individuals should include the following:

A proposal for planned summer research, including background, experimental methods, objective(s), and key expected results. The proposal should mention what laboratories the experiments will be carried out in and how the research is promoting collaborations between research laboratories. Maximum of two pages.

A one-page CV from the student.

A letter from the primary research advisor that mentions the proposal goals and how the project may lead to future funding opportunities.

We anticipate awarding approximately 10 undergraduate and 5 graduate summer research fellowships.

Applications are due on Wednesday, March 5, and decisions will be made by late March. To apply, please fill out the form below.

Good luck!
